Two Returns13 January 2009 Jack-Penate
Thamesbeat urghhh… Let’s NEVER go back there. Luckily, both Jamie T and Jack Penate have made huge musical statements – miles away from their debuts – with the first airings of music from their respective second albums.
Following on from the rather successful Panic Prevention I’m sure EMI were hoping for a few more versions of Shelia. Fire Fire is certainly not that. A mix of mc’d verses and a sung, hardcore chorus, (yes, very much like early Beastie Boys,) this is the kind of incendiary bit of music that will have kids trashing their bedrooms throughout the country. (I’m pretty sure the video would also make Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA pretty proud.)
Jamie-T – Fire Fire
Jack – rightly or not – has had his fair share of haters over the past couple of years. Lambasted for all and sundry, whilst being blamed for absolutely everything; the end of 2007 felt like the press, short of anything to write about, turned on Jack – the boy they’d once hailed as their own boy wonder – in the sourest of manners: announcing his musical death to all. However, with ‘Tonight’s Today’ Jack has returned in a fashion that will – surely even to the most ardent critic – cast him in a completely new light.
Tonight’s Today is 3.30 of pure joy. Underpinned by a chorus of shuffling drums – which could loosely be categorised under Afrobeat – and a pulsating bass line, the track is coloured with dreamy arrangements reminiscent or warm summer nights (no, i’m not going to say Balae….).
Anyway my ramblings are pointless. Just listen to the track and if you really can’t see its genius please post some hateful, anonymous comments.
